Lake Havasu City Vacation
We're in Lake Havasu City now, home of the London Bridge. Yup, that London Bridge. Apparently, some millionaire (not Joe) purchased it when it was falling apart and had it shipped here. There was nothing for it to span, so they built a lake for it and a tourist town grew from there.
We could have used our own millionaire or something today when our own bridge crumbled. After 3 days, 10 hours, and 21 minutes on the road, we hit capacity. While some 70's disco played in the background, my mom threatened to just end the trip right there on the highway. While we sat there accusing each other, the music continued it's happy tune, until finally my sister reached over and turned it off. The car was filled with an uncomfortable silence after that.
Since then we've been on our best behavior.
After we checked into our hotel, we pulled around back to our room. Our parking space happened to be next to a pick-up truck surrounded by a gaggle of short mexican men, clutching beers and chit-chatting. As we took our things from the trunk, a silence fell over the group and eleven sets of eyes followed our every move.
On our way back out to the car, the same thing happened again. I whispered to my sister, "think we should get some polaroids of ourselves to pass out?" My sister, never one to be comfortable with staring, asked very loudly,
"Can't you find something else to stare at?"
"Great," I said to her, "now they're going to go trash our room while we're gone."
A few hours later, after the sun had gone down, we returned to find them still standing there and surrounded by a growing pile of empty beer cans. My mom and my sister were nervous and decided to call the front desk to have them removed. I pleaded with them to reconsider.
"It's early and they aren't being very loud, let's give them the benefit of the doubt." i really didn't think they were a problem the way they were (they were only about four feet tall), but was worried about what actions they might take when they find out we asked for their removal. I had a car full of all my favorite possessions just a few feet away from them.
My mom called the front desk,
"There's a group of men loitering outside of our room and I am wondering if there is a reason for them to be there."
A little while later, the front desk called back,
"They are a group of construction workers staying in the hotel. They stay here all the time and are harmless. They're just talking."
I had to get something out of the car, but chickened out. I was so afraid of them calling me a racist bitch. I wanted to tell them that it wasn't me, that I loved Mexico, maybe even take out a photo of me and my ex-mexican boyfriend and invite them to visit me in California sometime. But I didn't, I felt too bad.
